I use the show for background noise and a chuckle now and again. The world is far too big to influence anybody to change their daily life. As an example, a small one, there are a lot of people who come into my work who, maybe for a few days, will change what they buy from me, be it cigarettes or liquor from behind the counter, I'll ask why and they'll say their doctor told them they need to stop using the stuff, and I tell them, good for them for stopping these horrible habits.
Less than a week later usually they're back to buying their old stuff.
Humans are creatures of habit and it is hard for a human to create a new habit, or stop one. And this applies to the entire world. Nobody is going to turn all the lights off in their house if they have lived with them running most of the day. Nobody is going to start recycling if they have never recycled before, and they're not going to sort their recyclables. Nobody is going to pay attention to Earth Day. I sure as hell don't.
People think of their time as valuable and will do whatever they can to squeeze every last action out of every last minute, every last second. Unfortunately, Bill Nye thinks we can just flip a new leaf at a moment's notice. Do you think the audience members in the first episode actually CARE about climate change? I highly doubt it. They were there because BILL NYE. And then they left, ate a bunch of fast food, drove their polluting car home and left a bunch of electronics plugged in and on to use, etc etc whatever.
We should enjoy the time we have left on this Earth, because quite frankly we are not going to be here for another 500 years at best, much less another 200 with the way things are going. Scientists can try to put information out there all they want, but the fact of the matter is, so many people are so disconnected from the rest of the world that they just literally do not care what other people are going through anywhere else in the world. Why should they? It's not directly affecting them. Flipping a light switch on is not causing them pain or torture, so why would they care?
Bill Nye is a valiant light in a sea of darkness, but when it comes down to it, he's a washed up 90's icon in a sea of people who just literally could care less about the planet. All that matters is that they can get into their car, get gas, get a bagel from the bagel place on the way to work or what have you, get to work, get a paycheck, support their family, have food, etc etc. We are not a hivemind, we are our own person. That's what I hate about scientists spewing stuff about climate change and stuff is, yes, there is stuff happening to the planet, but a studio audience or even a few million people is not going to change the direction of where the planet is headed.
Bill Nye's Show: 10/10 performance quality but 0/10 for trying... for lack of a better phrase, trying to shove his agenda down people's throats.
Also during his little "panel" sessions he is extremely biased towards answers people are giving him and he doesn't let people talk. It's like watching teenagers try and dispute something instead of letting people lay out their arguments and talk in a civilized manner. Especially the women who get onto those panels as well.
So, yeah, the show is pretty shit and it's only background noise worthy really.
